Since the evolution of the mankind, time and again, disease outbreaks have ravaged humanity. Spanish flu, plague, AIDS, SARS, COVID-19, etc. are a few examples of such diseases. It is a reminder to the humans that they are not the centre of the animal kingdom, but all the organisms, including the microbes, co-exist with us.

The statistics related to COVID-19 are changing with the blink of an eye. The fear for this illness is certainly leading to chaos and misinformation being spread along with the illness. The later can be more dangerous than the former. To combat both the spread of the virus and the worry, thus arising, we need strong preventive measures to combat the virus from entering our immediate surroundings.

Here are some ways, how we can protect ourselves from this pandemic at our workplace despite its seamless capacity of contagion.

Open dialogue about avoiding contact. There should be an open dialogue amongst the co-workers about avoiding close contact with people and keeping safe distance from others, especially in case of being sick. The management must consider how to lower the impact of COVID-19 in their workplace and share plans with everyone. Plans should identify and communicate their objectives, which may include one or more of the following:

·         reducing transmission among staff by maintaining and encouraging social distancing
·         discouraging the use of biometric sensors
·         protecting people who are at higher risk for adverse health complications

Actively allowing and encouraging the sick co-workers to stay home. It is recommended by various renowned health professionals and organizations that people with symptoms of acute respiratory illness must isolate themselves until they are free of fever, signs of a fever and any other symptoms for at least 24 hours, without the use of fever-reducing or other symptom-altering medicines.

Cover your mouth and nose at all times. Most air-borne diseases including COVID-19 spread through coughs, sneezes, or talks as these activities release tiny droplets with the germs into the air. That's where a covering your mouth and nose can help.

A face mask covers mouth and nose, thus, blocks the release of germ-filled droplets into the air. This helps slow the spread of diseases.

Serve/encourage eating food that builds/boosts immunity. Our body constantly has someone fighting for us even when we think nobody is doing that for us and that is the ‘immune system’. The easiest way to avoid the uncalled-for guests, read germs, inside our body is by strengthening our immunity. Therefore, it is important to eat immunity-boosting food. Encourage eating food items foods rich in Vitamin C like oranges, berries, sprouts, and tomatoes to keep one healthy and fit to fight diseases.

Right information to avoid misinformation.Posters containing important instructions regarding personal hygiene should be displayed at various spots in the offices. The management should offer guidance on hygiene to employees. The information may include instructions about the proper way of handwashing, the reminder to keep 6 feet distance and/or the reminder to avoid the urge of touching one’s face or mouth.

Disinfecting the areas which are frequently visited by many. There are areas like washrooms, conference rooms/ staff room, kitchen, canteen, lawn etc that are visited by many people. It is requisite for the management to place sanitizers, soaps and hand-washing gels in ample amount and ensure cleaning and disinfection of these places for around three-four times a day. Using UVC LED based robotic disinfection is a great and precise way to make offices a safe spot for interaction and maintain work feasibility. Axenic-UV is an initiative that has spent years of research and development to bring out a range of smart disinfection products like Sanitization robots, Microwave HVAC sanitizer, UVC Disinfection lamps, etc., that aim at creating a germ-free environment for stakeholders.
